Eating in Bormio: pizzoccheri, sciatt and Valtellina produce

Bormio’s cooking is that of Valtellina: buckwheat, mountain-pasture cheeses, cured meats and dishes made to warm up mountain evenings. Here is what to taste, where to do it according to our guide and where to buy produce to take home.

Dishes to taste

  • Pizzoccheri: buckwheat tagliatelle with savoy cabbage, potatoes, butter and cheese. The valley’s signature dish.
  • Sciatt: crispy buckwheat fritters with a melted cheese centre.
  • Polenta: including the taragna version, with buckwheat and cheese.
  • Game: in autumn, venison dishes often appear on menus, as in our selection below.

Where to eat: our selection

From the Easy Housing guide «Dove andare a Bormio» (Where to go in Bormio, v2, September 2026).

  • Osteria La Bajona: pizzoccheri and sharing boards beneath the Bajona tower; our pick for pizzoccheri;
  • Vecchia Combo: a family-run trattoria with sciatt and polenta;
  • La Rasiga: traditional cooking in an old sawmill, with venison and polenta;
  • Al Filò: Valtellina cooking in a 17th-century hayloft, a Buon Ricordo restaurant;
  • Kuerc: traditional dishes and pizza, overlooking piazza del Kuerc.

In low season some restaurants may have reduced opening. We do not list prices, opening hours or reviews.

Valtellina produce

  • Bresaola: the valley’s typical air-dried cured beef.
  • Mountain-pasture cheeses: among the best known are Bitto and Valtellina Casera.
  • Wines: Valtellina produces red wines from Nebbiolo grapes grown on terraces.
  • Amaro Braulio: the mountain-herb bitter liqueur born in Bormio.

Bormio’s food shops

From our guide, mostly along via Roma:

  • La Sceleira: a pantry of Valtellina produce, with mushrooms, honey and cured meats;
  • Donagrandi: butcher and delicatessen with cured meats and mountain-pasture cheeses;
  • Enoteca Guanella: wines and spirits in a 17th-century building, also a restaurant;
  • Casa Braulio: the shop of Bormio’s amaro, with cellar tours by reservation;
  • Pasticceria Pozzi: try the borminelli, almond biscuits; our pick for an original gift;
  • Panificio Eredi Romani: bonette, artisan cakes in many flavours.
