Getting to and around Bormio: train, bus and alpine passes

By train to Tirano

The train does not reach Bormio, but you can get there without a car: train to Tirano and then bus. The centre is explored on foot. Timetables change with the seasons and the alpine passes close.

The nearest station is Tirano. From Milano Centrale there is the direct Trenord RE8 (Milan – Lecco – Sondrio – Tirano). According to Trenord the journey takes about 2 and a half hours, with departures usually every hour. Check the day’s timetable on the Trenord app. The Rhaetian Railway (Ferrovia Retica) also arrives in Tirano, with the Bernina line.

From Tirano to Bormio: Perego bus A070

The line is the A070 Tirano – Sondalo – Bormio run by Bus Perego. In Tirano the bus leaves from the bus station by the railway station. In Bormio it arrives at the bus station. The winter timetable is in force from 14 September 2026 to 8 June 2027 and shows the connections with Trenord trains. Times and fares are on busperego.com.

Local lines from Bormio

With the 2026/27 winter timetable, the A071 to Valfurva Madonna dei Monti, the A072 to Livigno, the A073 to Santa Caterina and the A074 to Valdisotto remain in service. Services to the Stelvio, the Laghi di Cancano and the Gavia are seasonal and in 2026 ended in September. In October, do not count on a bus to the Stelvio.

By car: the SS38 and alpine passes

From Valtellina you drive up on the SS38 Stelvio road, from Tirano and Sondalo. The Stelvio Pass closes with snow: in 2026 closure is expected between late October and early November, depending on the weather. The Gavia Pass is seasonal. In winter, many mountain roads require winter tyres or snow chains on board. If the accommodation has a parking space, it is stated in the listing.

From the airports

There is no direct train from the Milan airports to Bormio. Without a car: Milano Centrale, the RE8 to Tirano, then the A070 bus.

Practical tips from Easy Housing

For your return, check the last A070 departure from Bormio. October is the season of foliage and the deer rut, but many services are already in low season: check times before you go out.
