Day trips from Bormio: Livigno, the Bernina and the surrounding valleys

Bormio lies at the heart of Alta Valtellina: in a day you can reach Livigno, Switzerland with the Bernina Red Train (Trenino Rosso del Bernina) and the valleys of the Stelvio National Park. Many trips depend on the season and the weather: here are the main ideas and what to check before you set off.

Before you set off

• Buses: the area’s intercity connections are run by Perego. Seasonal timetables and notices should be checked on the official channels.
• Roads: the alpine passes (Stelvio, Gavia) are seasonal and can close because of snow or bad weather. Check the official road information.
• Documents: for trips to Switzerland, every person, children included, needs an ID valid for travel abroad.

Livigno

Livigno can be reached from Bormio by bus on the Perego A072 line or by car. It is a high-mountain resort with a special tax status (a duty-free area): if you go shopping, find out beforehand about customs allowances on your return.

The Bernina Red Train from Tirano

From Tirano the Bernina Red Train of the Rhaetian Railway (Ferrovia Retica) sets off, crossing the Alps towards Switzerland. The Albula and Bernina line is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

From Bormio to Tirano you go by bus (Perego line A070) or by car. It is a long trip: plan it calmly, checking times and tickets on the official Rhaetian Railway website and the bus connections.

The valleys around Bormio
