Monza also works well on a rainy day: the main sights are indoors and the historic centre is compact, so the walks under the umbrella are short. Here is how to plan the day, with what to check before going out.
The Villa Reale is the natural choice for a rainy day: the apartments and historic rooms are visited indoors. Winter opening hours apply from 1 October and the Villa is also open on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. The official website recommends buying tickets in advance: do it before you go out, so you avoid queuing outside.
The Giardini Reali and the Parco di Monza are splendid, but in the rain it is better to save them for when the sun comes back.
From the Villa you can reach the historic centre on foot along the avenue or by bus (see Getting around Monza).
Opening times, tickets and any guided tours (for example of the Theodelinda Chapel) should be checked on the Duomo's official website before your visit.
