A weekend in Monza: two days between the Duomo, the Reggia and the Park
Monza is perfect for an unhurried weekend. The historic centre is compact and easy to explore on foot. The Reggia, with the Villa Reale, the Gardens and the Park, takes up half a day or more on its own, and Milan is close by if you want to add an evening in the city. Here is a two-day itinerary to adapt to the weather and the season.
Saturday morning: the historic centre and the Duomo
Start from the Duomo di Monza, the cathedral linked to Queen Theodelinda. Inside it is kept the Iron Crown, one of the most important medieval treasures in Europe. Next door is the Museo e Tesoro del Duomo, which tells centuries of sacred art and city history. For the Theodelinda Chapel and the Museum, check opening times, guided tours and bookings on the Duomo's official channels: they may change during services.
Then take a stroll around piazza Duomo, the Arengario and the pedestrian streets of the centre, such as via Italia. It is the right time for the shops: we suggest, for example, Drogheria Cirla for specialities and tea and Tea Shop Monza for a gift.
Saturday afternoon: Villa Reale and Gardens
From the centre you can reach the Villa Reale (viale Brianza 1) on foot or with the z221 bus (see our guide Getting around Monza).
- Villa Reale: winter opening hours apply from 1 October. It is open Wednesday to Friday from 10 am to 4 pm and on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays from 10:30 am to 6:30 pm, with last entry one hour before closing. The Reggia recommends buying your ticket in advance, choosing the day and time. Temporary exhibitions change during the year: check the programme before you go.
- Giardini Reali (Royal Gardens): open every day with free entry, with paths, the small lake and views of the villa.
- Roseto Niso Fumagalli (rose garden): closed on Mondays. Flowering is seasonal.
Sunday: the Parco di Monza
The Park is open every day with free entry and it is huge. Better to choose one part than to try to see it all. There are three main entrances: viale Brianza, via Enzo Ferrari and via Farina.
- A long walk among lawns and tree-lined avenues, or a bike ride.
- A detour towards the Autodromo: access, tours and open days should be checked on the official website.
In autumn the Park is especially beautiful for its colours. Bring comfortable shoes and a jacket.
Where to eat: our selection
Victory54; Hostaria Romana Quinto Quarto; I Toscano; La Cantina della Monaca; Silvestro; La Bodega Argentina. Before you go, check opening days and bookings directly with the restaurant.
If you have more time or if it rains
- Rain: the Duomo, the museum and the Villa Reale with its exhibitions.
- Evening: aperitivo and dinner in the centre, or Milan by train.
- Events: check road closures and bus diversions.
