Milan with children: ideas for a family-friendly city
Milan with children works if you slow down: one big thing a day, lots of breaks and short journeys. The city has parks, museums designed for little ones too and a metro network that, with a few precautions, works well with a pushchair.
Castello Sforzesco and Parco Sempione
The Castello Sforzesco, with its courtyards, appeals to children even from the outside: towers, a moat and big spaces to walk around. Inside are the civic museums; which galleries and family activities are available should be checked on the official website.
Behind the Castello lies Parco Sempione: lawns, avenues and room to run, in the heart of the city. Convenient metro stop: Cairoli (M1).
Museums and places to discover as a family
- Duomo di Milano: the climb to the rooftop terraces, among the spires, up to the view of the golden Madonnina (on the highest spire since 1774, at 108.5 metres), is a memory that lasts. Access rules for children and pushchairs should be checked on the official website.
- Orto Botanico di Brera: a hidden, quiet historic garden for a green break right in the centre.
- Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II: a covered stroll between piazza Duomo and piazza della Scala, pushchairs included.
Eating with children
From our guide «Dove andare a Milano» (v2, September 2026), a few simple ideas:
- Luini: the historic bakery known for its panzerotti, near the Duomo, for a quick lunch;
- Pizzium: Neapolitan pizza between Brera and the Castello;
- Pasticceria Marchesi 1824: for an afternoon treat;
- Trattoria Milanese: to let them taste cotoletta and risotto alla milanese.
Ask the restaurants about opening times, high chairs and space for pushchairs. We do not list times or prices.
Getting around with a pushchair
- Metro: not all stations have working lifts or escalators at every exit. Before setting off, check station accessibility and any facilities out of service on the ATM website or app.
- Tickets: rules and free travel for children on ATM services should be checked on the official channels. For contactless and lines, see Getting around Milan.
- Distances: the Duomo, Brera and the Castello are easy to reach on foot. Plan the day by area, as in our A weekend in Milan.
- Emergencies: 112. For non-urgent care: 116117, free of charge in Lombardy.
If it rains or if your stay is long
- Rain: indoor ideas in Milan in the rain.
- A trip out of town: Monza, with its large park, is a few minutes away by train. See Monza with children.
- Events: for upcoming festivals see Events in Milan and check the official programme for events suitable for children.
