Milan in the evening: aperitivo, neighbourhoods and getting back stress-free

Aperitivo, a Milanese ritual

In Milan, an aperitivo before dinner is a widespread habit in almost every neighbourhood. We do not recommend specific bars that we have not checked: the areas below have plenty, and it is best to choose the one close to where you will have dinner.

The evening neighbourhoods

  • Navigli and Darsena: the best-known area for an evening out, along the canals. It is very busy at weekends.
  • Brera: narrow cobbled streets, a short walk from the Duomo, with trattorias and bars. Convenient stops: Lanza (M2) and Cairoli (M1).
  • Isola and Porta Nuova: a lively neighbourhood next to the Porta Nuova skyscrapers, with restaurants and the 10 Corso Como concept store nearby.
  • Duomo and Galleria: an evening stroll in piazza Duomo and under the illuminated Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II is worth it even for just a few minutes.

Where to have dinner: our selection

From the Easy Housing guide «Dove andare a Milano» (v2, September 2026):

  • Trattoria Milanese: a historic trattoria, our pick for risotto alla milanese; also cotoletta and ossobuco;
  • Latteria di San Marco (Brera): a small trattoria with home-style dishes, no reservations;
  • Trattoria Torre di Pisa (Brera): Tuscan flavours;
  • Ratanà (Isola): seasonal Lombard cuisine, the veal chop must be ordered in advance;
  • Pizzium: Neapolitan pizza between Brera and the Castello.

Opening days, evening service and bookings should be checked with the restaurants. We do not list times or prices.

Events and special evenings

For upcoming festivals and evenings, see Events in Milan. Dates, venues and times should be checked on the official pages. For theatre and concert programmes, refer to the venues' official websites.

Getting back in the evening

  • Metro: check the evening closing times of the lines on the ATM app or website, as they may change by line, day and any works.
  • Night service: after the metro closes, ATM runs night surface lines. Routes, days and times are on the ATM app.
  • Contactless: on the ATM network you can pay with a contactless card at the gates; see the details in Getting around Milan.
  • Taxi: use the official apps or numbers of the Milan taxi service.
  • If you are staying outside Milan: check the last train to Monza or Como before going out. See also Monza in the evening and Como in the evening.
